The purpose of this guide is to enumerate all the types of projects that can be applied for, with definitions and examples for each.

1. Sub-Projects

The following project categories are all subsumed under the leadership of a solo project (see below).

Special Build

A special build consists of an individual building or complex within any of the other project categories. The size and importance of a special build can vary depending on circumstances, and accordingly, the procedure for applying for special builds can also vary. For a small special build (for instance, a prominent facade in a city district, or a small sept in a village), typically someone will just need to make a test and have it informally approved in-game by the project leader. For a large special build (for instance, a septry or holdfast), typically someone will have to apply on the project's forum thread, to be approved by the project leader as well as one of the project's approving mods.

Mini Project

A mini project is a small project subsumed within a larger project that involves some level of planning and leadership, such as a hamlet, village, or other settlement. To begin a mini project, an application must be posted on that project's thread and approved by the project leader as well as one of the approving mods.

2. Solo Projects

The following project categories are all applied for and lead individually by particular builders. A solo project may contain various sub-projects within its scope.

City District

This project category is only applicable for city server builds, and consists of planning and leadership of a particular sub-region of a city. The details of this type of project, and the procedures for applying for them, will vary depending on the particular city. In the case of the KL Remaster, approval by one mod is necessary to begin. Example of a district application from KL.

Immersion Build

An immersion build refers to any solo project that's not explicitly mentioned in the ASOIAF canon, typically as a way of filling empty space in the map. Immersion builds can span anything from manmade structures to terraforming projects, and as such have a degree of flexibility, but their existence must be adequately justified. Immersion builds can further be divided into two general categories:

Small Immersion Build: A small structure or complex on about the same scale as a special build or mini project. Requires a single mod approval to begin. Example of a small immersion build.

Large Immersion Build: A larger non-canon project on a similar scale as a canon project. Requires two mod approvals to begin. Example of a large immersion build.

See this wiki page for more information on immersion builds.

Canon Project

A canon project is the most common type of solo project, and refers to the location of any House explicitly mentioned in ASOIAF (listed here). Canon projects can further be divided into three types:

Redo: Complete removal and replacement of the old project. Whether a redo will be approved is subject to the No-Redo Rule.

Update: Part removal and replacement of the old project, updating remaining buildings without changing their form significantly to bring them to current standards. Extent of replacement to be negotiated with moderators. Also subject to the terms of the No-Redo Rule.

Foster: No removal of any existing builds, only adding where areas are left incomplete, and aesthetically updating existing buildings (without changing their underlying structure significantly) to bring them to current standards. An important factor in whether a foster application will be approved is whether or not the outdating factors of the project can be realistically solved by a stylistic facelift, rather than changes to the underlying plotting or structures.

See this wiki page for more information on canon projects. Example of a canon project application.

3. Macro-Projects

The following project categories are all overseen by particular builders, but with leadership being distributed under the supervision of the overall project head(s). A macro-project may contain solo projects as well as sub-projects within its scope.

Server Build

A server build is any special canon location (the seat of a Great House, a city, etc.) that's treated as a collaborative server project under the overall guidance of an experienced builder or mod. The nature of collaboration can differ based on the specific location. For city projects, often the city will be subdivided into individual districts that can be applied for (see above). For castles that form the seats of Great Houses, often the various parts of the castle and its surroundings will be available for testing and applications. Sometimes a server build may include a server build day where a server-wide building event is hosted for that project. Server builds are not applied for, but rather organized jointly with the mod team. Example of a server build.

Megabuild

A megabuild is a larger regional project consisting of what might typically be considered several separate solo projects. A megabuild may be proposed for a combination of several reasons, such as (1) To solidify a regional style, (2) To satisfy multiple project-spanning canon, (3) To foster/update abandoned nearby projects, and (4) Significant terrain improvement. However, while reasons (3) and (4) can be used to supplement a proposal, they cannot be the only reason for proposing a megabuild. A megabuild must aim to contribute some new content.

A megabuild should not merely be seen as a larger solo project by an individual builder, but should rather open up considerable parts of the project to application and leadership by others. The role of the megabuild leader is to oversee the region, ensure a cohesive style, and act as an expert on the economy/culture of that region.

A megabuild may be proposed by an experienced builder or team of builders including at least one experienced builder and/or moderator leading the team. Builders interested in applying for a megabuild will be highly vetted, and they must have a demonstrated track record of reliable progress in the region of interest. Megabuild leaders must be intimately familiar with all aspects that inform the current or proposed style, such as the economy and culture of the larger region. Example of a megabuild proposal.
