OT Teams - Introduction APPLICATIONS OPEN

Oldtown Dedicated Teams focus on certain overarching subprojects like the Sewers, Roads, Defenses or similar parts of the City, as explained before. In the following post, we explain the two different roles, Team Leader and Team Member in additional detail. You will learn about the requirements for these roles.

Team Leader

Teams are made up of 1 to at most 2 Team Leaders. Team Leaders take the role of a project manager for their team. They need to fulfill a number of additional requirements, like:
  • Define goals and Milestones
  • Coordinating with OT Core and other administration
  • Coordinating with Subdistrict Leaders
  • Coordinating with other Teams
  • Project Management of their own Team
  • Team Member coordination
  • Conflict resolution
  • Decision making
  • ...
As a Team Leader your primary goal is to enable your team members. You define goals and Milestones, divide those into digestible tasks, and coordinate those tasks with your team members. You need to learn to identify roadblocks and coordinate with the OT Administration, other Teams or entities in order to remove them.
You are required to set up and maintain a number of communication channels, each serving a separate purpose. All team members must have access and be able to contribute to each of these:
  • A Trello Board for task coordination. We have set up a Trello Board Template with further explanations. You are required to make a board for your team and keep it up to date.
  • A communication channel for your team. This could be a PM on the forums, or a PM on Discord. All Team members must have access to this communication channel.
  • A forum thread. We've set up threads for each Team. These are your team's front end to the community. Use the thread for Team Member applications, announcements, requests, or to discuss issues with the community or the OT Administration

Team Member

Teams can include 3 to at most 7 team members. Team members take the role of active contributors to a team. They need to take an active part in their team and contribute not only ingame, but also to the communicative tools like the Trello Board. A Team member's primary goal is to take up an available task and fulfill it, respond to feedback and further requests. We expect teams to autonomously resolve any disagreements in a civil manner, but team members must be prepared to accept their team leader's final decision even if they disagree with it.

Builders may be part of several Teams at once, but they must not act as team leaders in more than one team.

Applications welcome for:
Sewers - Team Lead
Defenses - Team Lead
Terraforming - Team Lead

Please keep in mind that these are primarily management roles. If you prefer to contribute to these teams in a more hands-on fashion, wait until the Teams start recruiting Team Members.

Can people apply to be Members of multiple teams? For example applying to be a member of Defenses and Support?

Because the question has come up a few times in the past couple days, I'd like to point out this bit from the OP:

Builders may be part of several Teams at once, but they must not act as team leaders in more than one team.
So, feel free to apply as a team member, even if you are already in another team. But also please understand that we might wait accepting your application a few days. We want that others, who have not yet had the chance to join a team, have the opportunity to join one, before someone gets to join a second one. If after a few days (or maybe a week or so) there's still vacant spots, we'll let you join. I think that's only fair.

Hey all!

We've decided to slightly change the way of how we're handling Oldtown, specifically how the teams will be working.

The teams will be divided into three groups that work at various stages during building.
  • Group 1; Water & sewage, defences, rivers & canals.
  • Group 2; Roads, plazas & squares, parks & gardens, underworld.
  • Group 3; Quality assurance, support, terraforming.
Group 1 and 2 will be working on specific subdistricts, rather than have their focus on the entire project. New subdistricts will be opened once the entire group is finished.

Group 1
This group sets up a subdistrict in order to be taken up by a subdistrict leader after they are finished. They can adjust the already present plotting and create the context and bounds of the subdistrict.

The work of these teams should be considered sacred; it’s not the intention to have any of its work altered after they have finished their respective tasks. What they create should be holding up by themselves and not rely on the work of others. This means they should provide the necessary details to do justice to their structures or features such as adding foliage, damage, additional buildings, yards, etc., but also need to leave as much space as possible that is not needed for these details (leave these areas empty, i.e. grass blocks without tall grass).

In general, the current plotting on site is not intended to be the final plotting, they are purely to give a rough indication of what should be there. Teams in group 1 can alter the plotting as long as it still resembles in broad lines what was plotted originally. This means:
  • The shapes, footprints, size and location of structures or features can (and in the case of buildings most likely should) be altered.
  • The terrain around the plotting can be altered.
  • The existing plotting not part of the respective team can be changed or moved if necessary.
  • The teams are NOT supposed to retexture the current plotting, slap some details on them and call it finished. We are giving you a lot more freedom for creativity than that, and we expect you to use that freedom to the fullest.
Team leaders will create a plan once a new subdistrict opens.

Group 2
This group works together with subdistrict leaders during plotting and once a subdistrict is fully built. They do little to no plotting themselves but add life and details to the streets, squares, gardens and other public areas within a subdistrict as well as fill in any spaces that are left unutilised.

Group 3
This group is active during the entire process of the server build and does not focus on specific subdistricts. They can be called on for support during any of the stages of building the city, be it terraforming, advice or solving disputes between leaders, or whatever does not fall within the responsibilities of the other teams.
