Hi JThompy,
Thanks for completing this application and for your patience while we found the time to take a look.

Nice work with replicating the application house, as I hope you can tell we try to put as much detail and signs of life as we can into our houses. Hopefully through this application process you'll see how this approach is carried across our different projects and styles.

You're off to a good start and I'm looking forward to seeing what you make next. For your first challenge build, please make a Low Class Farmer's house in the style of /warp hawthornetown and share screenshots of it in this thread (an easy way to do it is upload them imgur.com and share the link). Take note of commonalities between the houses (block mix, shape of roof, size of house, interior blocks, attic spaces, mezzanine platforms) and make a house that would fit into the Hawthorne town. It would be great if you could add a yard to it too.

If you haven't already, you can take a look at the Basic Building Guide for some more tips.

Please take your time to study the style in detail, and make sure to ask if you have any questions on the above feedback or the hawthornetown style.

Good luck!

Hello Cash,
I've completed the Farmer's House (in style of Hawthorne Town), it would accommodate 2-4 inhabitants, including children and adults. I was slightly cautions that I had made this too high class to be classified as a 'Low Class Farmer's House', but I've done my best.
(Any distortions on the screen shots is caused by my in-game FOV, if this in as issue i will resolve it for the future)

Hye Jthompy,
Thanks for completing this Hawthorne house. You've done a great job replicating the style and common features of houses in the area, and shown nice restraint with the choice of blocks for a low class house.

Only small point would be with the timber/daub blocks, when deciding on what kind of pattern to use, it looks good to frame open sections like doors/windows with daub blocks that have the wooden edge (since these indicate where the structural supports are).

1620265176555.png

You can also feel free to keep yards fairly square, with straight line walls. We used to have a tendency to create "bubble yards" which we've tried to avoid in recent times.

For your next challenge, please build a middle class professional house in the White Harbor style of /warp gullsgate (the general style in the sprawl outside the main city walls). Houses in large towns will usually have a profession on their on the ground floor and residence upstairs, take a look at the styleguide at the /warp oldstyleguides and the finished houses in the White Harbor area for inspiration, and give the house some kind of profession that would make sense in White Harbor (e.g. carpenter/cooper/blacksmith/boat builder, netmaker etc).

Note in the post which profession you go with.

Good luck!

Hallo Cash,
Here is the Middle Class, White Harbour style house. It is designed as a Blacksmith that would house 2 adults and 2 children.

Hey Jthompy,
Thanks for finishing this White Harbor Blacksmith, you've done a really nice job. Blacksmith was a good choice of profession and I like the small touches of life you'd added aruoond. The block mix is looking consistent the White Harbor style too.

Only small point of feedback I'd add would be to just rotate the floorboards so they span the shortest width of the house.

Great work overall though, for your (tentatively) last challenge, please build a middle class house in the style of Highgarden, (take a look around /warp hgtown). As with this White Harbor house, it should have a profession/business on the bottom level e.g. carpenter/wine merchant/tailor/blacksmith, and a yard would be great as well.

Thanks!

Heyo Cash,
Sorry for the delayed response, took me some time to wrap my head around how to build this one. After a couple of attempts I have come up with one I am happy with. I've built a Middle Class Wine Merchant that would house 2-3, possibly 4, residents. I found an issue using all the space in the bedroom particularly, some direction in this regard would be much appreciated.

Hey Jthompy,
Nice work with this Highgarden wine merchant. The shape and block palette overall is looking good, just a couple of things we could tighten up.
- It's good to clear out the grass around the house in high trafficked areas and swap in the dirt/gravel.
- Instead of the barrels you can use the vertical plank blocks for the edging around the house beneath the daub.

1621382420147.png
- I'd tone down the use of the glass cabinets through the house. Middle class houses are tricky since it can be hard to find that balance with what kind of blocks to use and how to demonstrate their moderate wealth without going overboard. Blocks with glass on them are generally restricted to High class houses, so would instead just use normal cabinets/shelves here instead.
1621385736640.png'
- I can see you've done the stair/slab floorboards on the top floors but not sure if used in the basement?
- I like that you've explored the block mix and tried to show some variety, wine merchants probably wouldn't store grapes themselves, the basement could probably just be used for barrel storage instead.
- Would also swap out the chain pulley for rope.
1621385910713.png
- Yeah there's a bit that could be done with the bedroom. I think the big thing that you could play with is subdividing the floor into two or three sections. Wooden plank blocks can be used to split off a master bedroom, and the other bunk beds could be put outside (maybe make those itchy straw to differentiate them too).
- Storage blocks like baskets/sacs/chests are always safe bets to decorate sleeping areas with along with shelves/cabinets/drawers.
- I also would use half doors instead of the wattle for the bank beds.
- Also with the cabinet/drawer blocks, try to make sure that only one face is exposed, use half doors to cover up the rest.

So we've got some minor points to work on but I think at this point you'll learn more from being an actual builder, so consider yourself approved!

Please make sure to read the New Builder guide here: http://westeroscraft.wikia.com/wiki/Newbie_guide

The next step is to make a probation thread in the Probation Forum. You can start building at any open locations on the server - you can find a list of these at /warp build, although it's sometimes outdated, so I would also recommend just asking people in-game and checking the forums for recent project happenings. You can also toggle open plot markers on the dynmap mc.westeroscraft.com

A probie leader should post on your thread within a week or so and continue to give you constructive feedback on your houses for the next month (and help be your entry point into the server community in general), although as sometimes the probie leaders are busy IRL you may need to be patient while they find the time to respond to you. But message me again if a probie leader hasn't contacted you within two weeks, or if they're taking a while to respond. I would also encourage you to seek feedback from project leaders and other builders/mods. At the end, you'll be made full builder assuming everything goes smoothly.

I'd suggest you also start thinking about what projects you might like to work on, we encourage new builders to first work on "mini-projects" which are small one off areas of other projects, e.g. a hamlet, mill, quarry, and flagged as open for mini-apps by the project leader. Once you've done a few of these you'll be able to apply for a full project.

Make sure to stay in touch and let us know if you're losing interest, not finding enough work to do, or if there's any issues with the probation.

Welcome aboard and I'll see you in Westeros!
