I had that thought a while ago and came up with a solution that doesn’t require adding a new block. We can add random short tufts of grass to the grass block itself. Boom.

Make a one block tall selection of the tip large enough to fit the circumference of the entire tower. Delete all stone type blocks Delete all wood type blocks Delete all deco type blocks Shift the selection down by one block Repeat Reverse. :p

I always wanted to do this! The stuff in the center is a new texture for redstone ore that I'm working on. When I run across it the texture switches and I leave some fiery footprints! :O
