MimiStockwell Builder Application

I was in need of something Westeros related to do in a video game, google westeros in minecraft, and this came up! Couldn't have been happier to have found it!

Well of course The Lord of The Rings! I watch so many shows and movies though, that it's very difficult to choose any favourites

Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, Storm of Swords, Feast for Crows, Dance of Dragons

Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, Season 6, Season 7

This question is the reason I have taken so long in applying as a builder. I could go off about so many characters, but for the sake of this question I'll go with my gut choice in Stannis. Stannis is so underrated by so many people. He is one of the most honourable men in the entire book series. Everything he does is because he is the legitimate heir to the Baratheon's throne. He makes very few mistakes in the books. His brooding character and bluntness are also a couple of traits that I'm drawn to in Stannis.

I will bring my full creativity and eye for detail! I have working in the film industry in continuity, I have quite the eye for small details, so when I mimic a building in the server, I will be able to make it look near identical. I have a very good memory for small details as well so I am able to work fairly quickly.
About 8 years ago, while I was in highschool, I ran the only minecraft server at my school. It was so much fun. This was before server mods and creative mode, just cheats over text. We did the math and built a 1x1 replica of the Colosseum. it may not be the most detailed or beautiful build ever, but it took us months of building (in between playing other games of course).

The reason that I would like to build on this server really comes down to a need to create and my desire to be a part of something fun and beautiful. It's absolutely incredible the work that has been put into this server. My mind was absolutely blown when I first looked around. It's a feat of humanity in my opinion... But that's a can of worms I don't feel like opening hah.
I really just want to play A Game of Thrones RPG in minecraft, and if I can contribute to speed things along to make that happen, I would love to be a part of the team to make it happen!

Side note, my game wont let me go into third person view for some . reason to show you myself in front of my builds... I've fully furnished the Inn as well if you'd like images of that. If you can help trouble shoot my third person that'd be dope.. lol

Hey Mimi,
Thanks for taking the time to put this application together and for your patience while we found a chance to take a look at it. We happily welcome anyone with some creative energy and a passion for Game of Thrones, so you're in good company.

I've taken a look at your collection of houses and on the whole, they're a really good start. You've clearly paid attention to our building styles and have really explored our custom block set.

I've just made a few notes on where the house can be improved which should be helpful on your next challenge.
- Overall the style, layout and block palette of the exteriors are nice, and the symmetrical daub patterns are done well on the tudor style house.
- My biggest note is just on the choice of interior items.
The designs of all our buildings are based on their respective wealth, either Low, Middle or High class, and the building's class will guide what kinds of blocks to use. The vast majority of the buildings in Westeros belong to poor farmers/peasants, who wouldn't be able to afford many, if any luxury/specialist items like bookshelves, glass bottles/cabinets/windows, fancy chest, written paper, paintings etc. You would really only see these items in a High Class house/castle, likely not in a cabin on the water. As you become acquainted with the server and our building styles you'll become more familiar with the kinds of blocks we would typically use on the average Low class build.
- Also regarding interiors, we usually try to make each level of a house at least 3 blocks high, I can see this one here is just 2 blocks, which can look a little cramped
1508
- When adding another floor to a building, you can use rows of stairs to create the effect of rafters like in the pic below. It's best to have these rafters span the width of the house rather than the length (means the beams are shorter/more structurally sound)
1510
- Since our cabinets/drawers blocks have doors/drawer handles on all 4 sides, it's best to use to use half doors to make sure that they only have one side visible. Here for example:
1511
- We also try to avoid using armor stands as they behave a bit strangely with our mod pack.

Otherwise though, well done.
If you haven't taken a look yet, this page has some more points and examples that will help on future builds.
https://forum.westeroscraft.com/wiki/basic-building-guide-for-applicants/

For the first challenge build, please make a Low Class Farmer's house in the style of /warp hawthornetown and share screenshots of it in this thread. Take note of commonalities between the houses (block mix, shape of roof, size of house, interior blocks). Please take your time to study the style in detail, and make sure to ask if you have any questions on the above feedback or the hawthornetown style.

Good luck!

Hey Cash!

Thank you for your reply!

The thing I had/have the most trouble with is decorating. I often find myself going a little overboard where keeping it simple is often the better choice!
Thanks for the feedback too! I'm currently doing my research into the hawthorn town now. I will take all of your advice/criticisms in mind during my build!

Would you like me to do anything with the exterior/surrounding area? Like make a farm or anything of the sorts? I'll focus on just the building itself mainly and do something afterwards regardless heh.

Gettin' to it!

No worries Mimi, it takes practice but you'll pick it up. It's easy when you start with small low class farm houses since there's only a handful of low class decorative blocks to chose from, and you can take inspiration from other low class houses in the area.

For this challenge it would be great if you were able to just add a small yard, perhaps with a small veggie patch/laundry area but no need to do a whole farm.

Alright so I have been busy... lol

I ended up making 2 houses both low class, both different sizes and slightly different style.

With the larger house I maybe should have used the light thatch for the roof, but I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out.
I look forward to hearing your criticisms!

Hey Mimi,
Thanks for completing those Hawthorne houses, on the whole you've done a really good job, have only got a few small suggestions.

- the shape, layout and block palette all look good and in keeping with the Hawthorne style, except that as you noted the lighter thatch would be the one to go with the match the others.

- All the interior/yard details are nice and appropriate to a low class farmer too.

- With the roof, the rule of thumb is to try and make sure that the exterior roof block isn't visible from inside the house, you can use half door blocks to cover up these spots like in the example below.

1517

Here's an example of the half door rafters
1520

Also, not a big deal here since I think there's a few houses in Hawthorne that don't follow this rule , but when adding these interior levels it looks best when you have the rafters spanning the shortest span of the house (means the beams are shorter and more structurally strong).

1519

Overall though, great job. For your next challenge, please build a middle class house in the style of /warp whsprawl. Take a look at the styleguide at /warp oldstyleguides and the finished houses in the White Harbor area (try around /warp wolfsgate) and give the house some kind of profession that would make sense in White Harbor (e.g. carpenter/cooper/baker/boat builder, netmaker etc). Note in the post which profession you go with as well.

Good luck!

So I used your tips and pointers for this next build. It was definitely more difficult this time around!

I chose to go with the profession of netmaker. I've added brief descriptions underneath each photo, just to make every nice and clear.
For some reason I just feel like I'm missing something here.. But I'll have to let you be the judge of that at this point!

Thanks!!

Hey Mimi,
Thanks for the speedy turnaround on this one, I think overall you're showing some good signs of improvement, just got a couple of notes.
It can be tricky to get the layout of diagonal houses right so I appreciate the effort, I think the shape might be a little off here, since the sides look a little uneven.
Here's how we would usually shape diagonal houses:
1522

Also I think the angle of the roof could be a little steeper, the white harbor style has a consistent block+stair pattern from the top of the roof to bottom.
1523

Otherwise I think the interior details are nice, net maker was a good choice and the block palette is appropriate to White Harbor, so great work so far.

For your next challenge, please build a middle class house in the style of /warp hgtown. As with WH the house should have a profession/business on their bottom level e.g. carpenter/merchant/blacksmith.

Thank you for the tips on shaping diagonal houses, that was definitely the trickiest part. Also noted the roof height! I may play around a little with those.

I'll probably be a little slower in getting this next challenge done, just been a little busy with it being Canadian thanksgiving weekend lol
Should be done by the end of next week!

Alright, here we go!

For this house I chose the profession of Ale Merchant.

I had a hard time with the exterior details just because I found it difficult not having other buildings around to match and build around with this style. So the backyard is a little pathetic and not so great..
I also might not have wanted to use the reach paneling along the base of the building and just use stone and bricks instead. It just looks a little too upper class in my opinion, but it looks nice so ohh wellllll..... heh

Hey Mimi,
Really good job with this one, you've done well to match the Highgarden style and to handle the challenge of not having neighbouring buildings to match it too. An ale merchant was a good choice for a profession too.

Only small note is that I believe you'll find that HG houses typically have Black Slate roofs rather than the brighter Blue Slate (which is actually used pretty rarely, and it's easy to get them mixed up). The stone brick paved yard might be a little overkill as well, but maybe they needed it for the ale wagons.

The next step is to contact a mod in-game to promote you to New Builder. Please make sure to read the New Builder guide here: http://westeroscraft.wikia.com/wiki/Newbie_guide

Then you need to make a Probation Thread in the probation forum. You can start building at any open locations on the server - you can find these at /warp build, although it's sometimes outdated, so I would also recommend just asking people in-game and checking the forums for recent project happenings.

A probie leader should post on your thread within a week or so and continue to give you constructive feedback on your houses for the next month (and help be your entry point into the server community in general), although as sometimes the probie leaders are busy IRL, I would also encourage you to seek feedback from project leaders and other builders/mods. At the end, you'll be made full builder assuming everything goes smoothly.

Reach out to me or one of the other mods if you haven't heard from your probie leader in a while.

When you're ready to get started, you'll find some plots ready to be build on at the southern corner of Stoney Sept (/warp ss)

Welcome to the team and I'll see you in Westeros!
