What is your Minecraft username?
Frappson

What is your age?
21-24

In what country are you living?
Sweden

Where did you first hear about WesterosCraft?
Don't Remember

What do you like the most about GoT/ASoIaF?
I really love the extensive world building, to the last detail. What fascinates me the most is the Targaryen lineage and family tree. (fire and blood is the goat). The conflicts, suspension and general feel of dispair is unparalleled in my opinion. Everyone is at guilt for the dance of the dragons yet you cant really blame anyone. Thats George RR Martin writing at its finest. SPOILERS: My absolute favourite scene is the battle above the godseye/Harrenhal between Aemond and Daemond. The way he just leaps on to Vhagar is just something else.

What is your favorite build on our server?
Starfall. Even tho it isnt the biggest build on the server i find its style and blocks of choice to be superb. A close second is Dragonstone. The dragon statues with the vulcano and the way it blends in to the landscape is also very pretty to look at.

Why do you want to join our server?
I have just started playing minecraft again after about a 2 year absence and for personal reasons i have a lot more sparetime to play games. I have always loved building in minecraft and i have since 2013 been a fan of both the books and the show. None of my friends find building in minecraft as fun as i do so i have often been alone when i have built things. I just think i would have a blast building on the server even if its just small houses or hamlets. Other than that i used to be a pretty experienced builder, i have built replica of Erebor in survival minecraft and i have also built countless of other projects.

Did you follow the application rules?
You know nothing, Jon Snow.

Hey Frappson! Seems like you are missing OptiFine. It's not included in our server modpack but it's still needed for it to properly run, at least for now. It will significantly improve the look of your house and our builds when you see them. I don't know which launcher you are using to access our server but in our Getting Started guides you can find how to properly install OptiFine under any of the recommended launcher options. It's pretty easy, just be careful with the sketchy links and pop up windows that may appear when you click the download link. Here you can see how the build looks with optifine installed:

2021-08-07_22.53.16.png
2021-08-07_22.50.21.png

With this build we hope you catched some of the techniques and ways we have of building here. Now your task will be to build other houses in the style of different locations in our server, but this time instead of copying you will have to come up with a design of your own based on the characteristics of the area we tell you.

Your next challenge will be to build a house in the style of /warp Kerseyford, with a yard. Once you are done you can upload some screenshots here and I will evaluate them as soon as I can. Good luck and have fun!

Hi! I just built the house(s). Since Kerseyford had lots of different colourthemes i just picked one of the houses and stuck with it. I built a cornerhouse with a small garden on one of the houses. I decorated one of the houses with a kitchen, bedrooms, foodstorage and a loft. Unfortunately the ''proffession'' signs didnt work in singleplayer hence the lack of profession-themed houses and interiors. Just imagine the leftmost house as a poorer variant compared to the other two. Unfortunately i forgot to add dirt slabs on the road when the height changed. Feel free to ask for more pictures if you need it!

Hey Frappson! Good job with your house(s)! Although I just asked for one it is nice to see you try and make a couple. Yes, it is true that Kerseyford has different palettes and themes, that's pretty common all over the server. Whenever I ask you to build a house in any location's style you are free to chose any of the ones there to make it.

Regarding the profession signs, you have to stack two of them, one on top of the other. Otherwise they won't work. You can see at the image below what I mean:
2023-03-27_22.56.07.png

Now I will give you some feedback about your build. You already pointed out the dirt slabs, so I will leave that out
  • Don't use thacht to texturize the road. Thatch would get washed out with rain, and the carpets make it look a little bit too "bumpy". Don't have full water blocks either, if you think about it they would be quite deep. If you want you can use path blocks or pebble layers ocassionally for potholes.
  • Don't use terrainset blocks for roofs. They are meant to represent natural rocks, so they look odd as part of most man-made structures. Kerseyford has light thatch, dark wood and brown slate as roof materials, you can instead play with those for that one roof.
  • A small tip: when making diagonal roofs turn the stairs at the end of a section so you can cover the wall material that would otherwise peak through. Here you can see an example of what I mean:
collage.jpg
  • Just so you know, in Westeros red lanterns are a sign of a borthel or whorehouse, so unless that was the profession you had in mind that house might be misslabeled hahahaha
  • Some of the daub and wattle needs a little bit of polishing. In general it is better to keep it simple, unless you are making a fancy building or working with a style that uses lots of complex patterns. Neither is the case for Kerseyford. Daub and wattle can take a little bit of time to get the hang of, so don't worry if you struggle a little bit with it. Here are some of the changes I would make to your patterns:
collage (1).jpg
  • When doing yards try going for more rectangular simpler shapes, rather than blobs or more smooth circles. Also such a small patch of wheat isn't really worth growing, veggies would be the ones grown at yards.
  • Try having less but bigger and more regular patches of thatch at the floor, instead of spreading it all over in small clumps. They would resemble "coarse" carpets, more or less.
  • Glass door cabinets and books are too fancy and expensive for a village house.
  • I saw you did it most of the time, which tells me you are aware of that rule, but just to remind it: 4-sided blocks like cabinets or shelves are meant to have all their faces but one covered. They look odd if this isn't the case.
This may seem like a lot, but for the most part they are all minor detailing points. The overal builds are good, and I think you already have the general shapes and proportions right, which is a big step! Within very little you won't really think about what I just said, it will come out as the natural way of doing things. For your next challenge go to /warp OAtown and build a house with a profession and a yard. If for some reason you can't still make the profession signs work it's okay, just tell me what's the profession you have built. Good luck and have fun!

Wassup, thanks for a detailed feedback. Regarding the blocks that i used i just used what i thought looked good, i didnt really think that the blocks serves a purpose, for example the terrainset and the red lantern etc.. that is just something i need to get used to i guess. The thatch on the road was just something that ended up in the road build because it was present in one of the gardens so i just used it without any further thought. I think i just need to get used to the building style of the server, i have most often built by myself and i have done what i thought looked good in my eyes, thats something that i need to work on!

Anyways im done with the Oatown build. Same as before its a corner house(s) with a a profession ''Ale merchant''. The corner house is the one that has interior and a finished garden. I have tried to follow the established pattern of Oatown as much as i could without ''blatantly'' copying any of the houses.
The gardens are fairly rectangular without looking too uniform, ofcourse the gardens at Oatown usually connects with the outer city wall and in this build that doesnt have that lol.

Heres the pictures of the build, feel free to ask for more!

Hi Frappson! Nice job! I can tell you incorporated the feedback I gave you. I quite like that you added a ramp for barrels at the basement, as well as the darker stone to show the humidity at it. Exteriors are also pretty solid, I have pretty minor comments about them. Regarding the block usage you mention, you will soon find that the way we use them is a bit mixed: overall we try to respect what they are meant to represent, but exceptions are made many times, specially for detailing work, when we may lack a specific block to depict a very niche detail. As usual now I will give you my feedback about it:
  • The yards are a bit irregularly shaped still, though it is true that in Old Anchor many have somewhat unique shapes due to they conforming to the external wall, as you mentioned, or the curve of a street.
  • When doing the rafters of a ceiling instead of just using upside-down stair blocks, which can look a little bit crowded, try using a combination of slabs and stairs. This is the basic ceiling rafter design, you will find it on many houses all over the server.
2023-02-19_20.14.30.png2023-02-19_20.16.18.png
  • Don't forget to add a gradient to all stone walls, you missed some inside hehehehe
  • Remember to add rafters under the roof at the top floor too! Some stairs and slabs are more than enough.
2023-02-19_20.22.15.png
  • Overall your interiors are a bit empty. Some more specific tips I can give you are, for example, adding headboards or footboards, specially at fancier beds. Poorer beds can just have a small wattle fence at their feet. Also on poorer rooms you can add thatch carpets, baskets or chests (better if double) for storage, maybe a cobweb... Take a look at the insides of houses and look at the many ways one can do tables, seats, closets and other furniture.
For your next challenge go to /warp Duskendale and build a high class house with a profession and a yard. You will find many at the northern side of the city as well as the street that goes up to the sept. They can be identified by their elaborate exteriors and fancy decor. This challenge will allow you to play more with furniture and interiors. Good luck and have fun!

PS: Next time try to take pics with night vision, you can turn off portion particles under video settings if you find them annoying. Also you may want to check Imgur.com for making large image albums, that way you can overcome the 10 images-per-post limit at out forums. Check other builder apps, you will find many people use it.

Im done with the Duskendale build, it\s a spice merchant trading only the finest of sugars and sourleafs all the way from Asshai.
Regarding the rafters on the rooftops on the last build, i did exactly like you showed on the picture but it was probably hard to see because of all the small walls and rooms in the attic.

Hey Frappson, nice build! I can see you incorporated many of the points I made before. Regarding the rafters don't worry about it, in most of the pictures you uploaded I can see you tried to do it. Having said all that, now I will give you some feedback, as usual:
  • In general, don't mix the different types of daub on the same wall/building, unless you are trying to represent an extension or later addition. It looks a bit odd, as in most cases the daub would have been done at the same time or at least finished to look the same. I'm refereing in this case to the build with the brown daub where you added a square of white daub.
  • When doing the underside rafters of a steep gable (>45 degrees) add half doors at the jumps between stairs. This is a bit hard to explain just writing it so I will give you a picture as an example:
Inked2023-04-09_04.08.56.jpg
  • Given that this is a high class townhouse, you don't need a yard wall so beaten up and thick. A less ruined 1 block thick wall would work just fine. Less ruined because it would be taken care of, unless the house owners have lost much of their wealth, and less thick because too thick can look odd within a city. It can also be made with more straight lines and less wavy segments.
  • Your interiors have improved, congrats! Some small tips for future reference: you don't have to use cushion blocks every time you want to make a chair. Wool, leather or thatch are other options to spice up the look of a room. Cushions would be very fancy furniture, it should be limited to the wealthiest households (in this case they fit, just a small note). Also you should give a try to other table desings other than the traditional fence post+carpet, as it can look quite vanilla Minecraft.

All that said, I think it's time for you to get to the next stage. Anything new to learn would be much easier to do ingame, with a more active imput. Consider yourself approved :D!

Next time you get online ask an available moderator (those with red names) to promote you, and before that make sure to read the New Builders' Guide. There you will find useful information regarding your new role as a "probie", as we like to call it, as well as everything you need to know and do during this time, like opening a Probation Thread. Once all that is done your Probation will begin.

Just like I did here with your app, a probation leader will step up and take you as their "probie". They will judge your builds and guide you, giving you feedback, tips and tricks. Think of it as an extension of your Builder Application, but much more engaged, and hopefully even more fruitful! On top of learning more of our ways of building you will also get a good grip on how we manage builds and the community as a whole, as well as engaiging with other members of it, something I encourage you to do. Out of those little interactions you will learn a lot, trust me! Feedback can come from anyone in the server, so be willing to listen to what they have to say, with time you may end up on their spot hehehe.

To start building you can look at the dynamap in our website and toggle the "Open Plot" option, go to /warp build, check the forums for the most recent active projects or ask any online members around for open building spots. Also don't forget to ask any moderator online for a plot of your own at the Test World (aka Testeros), where you will be able to practise your builds.

Congrats and welcome to the team!
