Hey Flip,
Thanks for applying and for your patience while we found the time to review your application, we've had a big rush of builders in the last few weeks, appreciate you hanging in there though.

Nice work with this Reach style house. You've kept it nicely modest with nothing too fancy or overly complicated. On the whole it's really nice.
Only a few small notes
- The yard detail is all looking nice, the vegetable patch could be a little more randomised, like placing the crops all the way to the edge of the wattle fence (you can flip the wattle around so you're placing it on the grass block letting you add more plants). You could also make the other yard's leafy fence (called a bocage) a little more randomised.
- basket blocks are also good for adding to interiors as storage.

You're off to a good start and I'm looking forward to seeing what you make next. For your first challenge build, please make a Low Class Farmer's house in the style of /warp hawthornetown and share screenshots of it in this thread. Take note of commonalities between the houses (block mix, shape of roof, size of house, interior blocks, attic spaces, mezzanine platforms) and make a house that would fit into the Hawthorne town.

Please take your time to study the style in detail, and make sure to ask if you have any questions on the above feedback or the hawthornetown style.

Good luck!

Hi cash thanks for the feedback, I’m not so sure what counts as a low class house in Hawthorne town. Are they the ones with peeked roofs as my test build of one of these looks a bit to grand.

This is my house in the style of Hawthorne town. It is a house for a family of 4-6 who work in farms nearby.

I am not linking the chimney in this house (i think its a bit to "grand" for a low class house) so any suggestions from anyone on how to improve would be helpful. Was unsure if you wanted a yard so i built one anyway. I used your feedback and flipped the fences around to add more blocks what aloud me to create a outdoor carpenter bench i saw on the server.

All feedback is welcome thanks - Flip

Hey Flip,
Nice work with this house, you've done a great job with capturing the Hawthorne style.
I don't have a lot to suggest, since you've got a good grasp on the basics.
- Chimney, I'd probably just lower its height by one block and it should be fine.
- There's room on that kitchen bench for small decorative items like a dagger block/ unlit candle/baskets/mug that would help give it a little more character.
- Yard is looking nice, thanks for adding that.
- Just with the internal roof rafters, you could probably swap our a few more of those wooden slabs for wooden stairs to show added support.

Well done overall though. For your nice challenge, please build a middle class professional house in the style of /warp hgtown. Houses in large towns will usually have a profession on their on the ground floor and residence upstairs, take a look at the finished houses in the area for inspiration, and give the house some kind of profession that would make sense in Highgarden (e.g. carpenter/wine merchant/tailor/blacksmith) and a yard would be great as well.

This is a baker house that you would find in high garden town the orange wall is where you would find an attached terrace house along the same street. The yard is small and only for firewood storage for the oven and clothes to dry. The house has 3 bedrooms and one main room up stairs.

Thanks Flip
That's a nice looking house, just a couple of notes:
1616499040927.png
Rather than the flat planks, it's nice to use stairs/half slabs to create the effect of rafters like this:

1616498497339.png
The shape of the Highgarden houses is also more along the lines of the cross section below on the right.
1616499087517.png
- The kitchen is also looking a little empty there, you could potentially add some over head cabinets, or like a cabbage/basket on the bench.

This bedroom could use a bit more love and character as well.

1616499288170.png
Here are some examples of other bedrooms around highgarden to give you an idea of the sort of detail we try to add.

For your (tentatively) last challenge, see you go with a more rural style - please make a farmstead in the style of /warp gaunt. At the very least, a farmstead should include a home for living, a sizeable yard with vegetable and herb patches, a barn and pens for livestock, etc. but I encourage you to do research on top of this. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

I found some of the rooms interiors hard as I was using the half doors as walls and it didn’t let me place blocks right up against them, is there a way of doing this - I know you can rotate them but if I wanted to have furniture on both sides?

I don’t understand what you said about the roof cross section?

Thanks for the feedback will start working on the farmstead soon.

By cross section I mean the slope of the roof, looks you were just a little off with the pattern of stairs and blocks.

Here's a tip for adding blocks along side half doors

So here goes then. This is my farmstead in the style of /warp gaunt. As this build is larger i increased the amount of planning and research i did for this. I started by doing what i have seen others do on this server and plotting my buildings and vegetable patches. Can be seen here:

2021-03-24_13.12.11-min.png 1616683459755.png

The blue wool is the barn and the farmhouse, the red is the small pig pen, orange is the walls/hedges, white is the vegetable patches and yellow is the paths.
The image on the right is one of the images i used for inspiration the wattle and daub houses and the low wall surrounding the farmstead fit this theme well.

In the next post i will post the images of the finished build, as always open to all forms of feedback and if you require more pictures from different angles i can get you them soon. - Flip

Hi I’m currently in the process of upgrading my computer, if things go to plan and the delivery’s arrive on time I should be back on Monday. If not I might be inactive for a few extra days.

Update, I’ve just been sent an email saying one of the parts is running late.... It should arrive any time between the 31st March and 13th of April (it’s coming with the royal mail). So this could lead to a longer period of inactivity for my app builds. Sorry but nothing I can do about this. :(

Hey Flip, that's great news about your PC.

Nice work with this Gaunt farmstead, I like how you approached the plotting of the layout and it looks like you've addressed the key points of feedback on the last houses.

I think at this point you'll learn more from being an actual builder, so consider yourself approved!

Please make sure to read the New Builder guide here: http://westeroscraft.wikia.com/wiki/Newbie_guide

The next step is to make a probation thread in the Probation Forum. You can start building at any open locations on the server - you can find a list of these at /warp build, although it's sometimes outdated, so I would also recommend just asking people in-game and checking the forums for recent project happenings. You can also toggle open plot markers on the dynmap mc.westeroscraft.com

A probie leader should post on your thread within a week or so and continue to give you constructive feedback on your houses for the next month (and help be your entry point into the server community in general), although as sometimes the probie leaders are busy IRL you may need to be patient while they find the time to respond to you. But message me again if a probie leader hasn't contacted you within two weeks, or if they're taking a while to respond. I would also encourage you to seek feedback from project leaders and other builders/mods. At the end, you'll be made full builder assuming everything goes smoothly.

I'd suggest you also start thinking about what projects you might like to work on, we encourage new builders to first work on "mini-projects" which are small one off areas of other projects, e.g. a hamlet, mill, quarry, and flagged as open for mini-apps by the project leader. Once you've done a few of these you'll be able to apply for a full project.

Make sure to stay in touch and let us know if you're losing interest, not finding enough work to do, or if there's any issues with the probation.

Welcome aboard and I'll see you in Westeros!
