Description

House Bolling is a knightly house, founded by a bastard of House Durrandon before Aegon's Conquest. located in the center of Cape Wrath in the Stormlands. They are a vassal of house Mertyns of Mistwood, and make a modest living selling high quality, old growth lumber. In known history, the lands of house Bolling have never seen conflict, the greatest danger to the smallfolk coming from bears amongst the forest, against which the hamlets have built palisades.
For centuries, the land itself has provided them with safety and security. Hills to the north provide a narrow gap and a steep path for any would-be invaders, bogs and a large lake prevent any offroad travel from the east, and a large river runs from the west to the south, with only two crossing points. When Stepstones pirates and Dornish savages raided Cape Wrath in 8AC, the river and rainfall acted as a natural barrier to prevent the forest fires from growing any further into their lands, and the chokepoints on the river meant any proper invasion further north would have been futile.
That isn't to say peace has created stagnation though, house Bolling is the only house on Cape Wrath (aside from House Seaworth) to have converted to the Faith of the Seven, and thus boasts the only septry on the peninsula. Ancient weirwoods were cut down and replaced with shrines to each of the seven (strangely, each shrine is said to have a great view of a nearby landmark).
Loyal to their liege lords Mertyns, the Bollings have followed the nobility of Mistwood through every major conflict. The Bollings swore fealty to house Baratheon after the conquest, declared for Aegon II in the dance, fought for Daemon Blackfyre in the initial Blackfyre rebellion, and have fought for King Robert in his rebellion against the iron throne. They also took part in quelling the Greyjoy rebellion a decade ago.
They are not insignificant either, as during the reign of King Maegor the Cruel, Ser Theo Bolling would marry Elinor Costayne of Three Towers. Maegor however would have the knight executed on false charges the same day he arrived in King's Landing, and would take Elinor as his own wife. The three children would be fostered at Highgarden, the Eyrie, and the Red Keep itself, from oldest to youngest.
The current Ser Bolling, Hubert, has followed his liege lord to one of the camps of King Renly, and hopes to make a name for himself and finally earn lordship through their conquest of King's Landing. He has left behind his wife and children, who will surely see him again when he returns home victorious.

Features

If you intend to travel through the lands of house Bolling, there are many points of interest you can enjoy yourself at, though not all have a well travelled path from one place to the next. The smallfolk of /warp bolham1 and bolham2 are preparing for the harvest festival, so why not join them? To the southwest lies a magnificent pear orchard and cidery at /warp Bollingorchard. as well as a mors winery somewhere in the woods. A fantastic hilltop septry can be found at Bollingseptry, as well as a farm nearby. The castle is at /warp Bolling, and a logging camp at bollogging1. There is also a witch's hut next to the main hamlet. There is also another holdfast with an attached mini-hamlet to the southwest of the project, and a cenote nearby! Lastly there is the lord's hunting lodge below a ridge.

Construction

Doing Bolling took about 3 years, but it was fun and worth it. It started with the castle but throughout the process, it got redone and refined about four or five times into what's there now, Various bridges, cave tunnels and pathways were tried until it settled on the current switchback style. Anthony_Justman and Batelgeuse were massive helps in getting the castle right. The easiest part to do were the minis, Opaco's holdfast eventually turned into the hunting lodge, Jeff's holdfast and mini-hamlet, Jake, Guillotine and Nava did a fantastic septry, as well as Uthor's hamlet. Homiesucc did the farm and logging camp, as well as the main hamlet. Hundreds of ideas were given by Nava throughout so the project wouldn't have been completed without her.
The hardest part was by far the terra, which is why the project took so long. Understanding the hydrology of bogs and rivers was difficult. The last part was the forest, which went from impossible to natural with guidance from Nava, like undergrowth, shrubbery and canopies, and custom scripts to finish off the land.

Inspiration

Originally inspired by eastern european castles, Bolling started off with a slovakian inspired castle and huts, but with Guil's help, the style evolved into something entirely unique, and with the help of Ant and Batel, the castle became something else entirely. At some point real world styles went out the window and instead used what felt like the Stormlands, and that was for the best.
