KL Remaster Guideline Updates

Hey everyone,

Been meaning to post this for a while now, but finally got a chance to finish it. This post contains a list of changes or clarifications to the KL Remaster procedure that the mod team has discussed. These updates are on top of the set of rules described here. Please be sure to read the updates if you've done a district, are currently leading one, or are planning to!

I'm planning to make a separate post soon-ish addressing some stylistic points, so stay tuned for that as well.

1. Approval and post-approval

After a district is finished, it must go through 3 stages:
1) Approval and preparation by the district leader(s)
2) Paste into Production and completion/refinement
3) Mod post-approval

In stage (1), the district leader(s) should thoroughly check every house in their district and make sure the house is complete and up to standards. The district leader(s) should reduce the tags above each approved house to a minimal tag containing the following things:
  • a single red/orange/green concrete block
  • a House Count utility block
  • an Approved utility block
  • signs containing the profession and the builder's username
  • a Note block in the case where the house contains painting/item frame placeholders (see below)

Additionally, the district leader must replace any paintings and item frames houses with Note utility blocks with signs indicating the painting number or item name, respectively. Click here to see the numbers corresponding to each painting, or do /warp paintings in-game. If a house contains Note block placeholders, the district leader should also put a Note utility block above the house tag.

The approving mod of the district, of course, may elect to look through the district at this point, though formal "post-approval" doesn't come until the district is pasted back into the main map.

In stage (2), the completed districts are pasted back into production. It's currently undecided whether this will happen once we have groups of adjacent finished districts, or if we'll do this once all districts are finished. However, after districts are pasted back in production, paintings and item-frames should be re-added to any houses with placeholders from the previous stage. Additionally, roads will be finalized and completed at this point (though district leaders are welcome to experiment with the roads in their districts before that).

In stage (3), the mod who approved the district will do a thorough post-approval, as well as count house contributions in a Google Sheets document. Tags will finally be removed after post-approval.

NOTE: in the future, we may create a more interactive spreadsheet for the KL remaster, similar to the one Iwan recently revealed for Oldtown, which will allow us to maintain more detailed statistics. However, the procedure here still needs to be fully worked out, so this may come in a future update. At that point, we may call on district leaders to help fill out the spreadsheet for their district.

2. Testing requirements

To ensure stylistic cohesiveness between districts, all district applications must include tests for all distinct styles occurring within the district (where two styles are "distinct" if there are non-trivial stylistic differences between them). If a district is adjacent to a city square or other location with a unique style, the application should also include a description and tests (as applicable) of how the applicant plans to transition from the unique style to the "normal" city style.

3. Eligible districts

Only districts adjacent to a completed or in-progress district will henceforth be considered eligible for applications. Otherwise, an applicant must request (and give justification for) an exception to this rule from the mod team.

4. Special builds

To ensure transparency and fairness, all special builds within a district from now on should be formally applied for on the forums, with a brief description and tests (as applicable). Special builds include things such as major septs, guildhalls, named/canon locations, and anything else at the discretion of the district leader. When applying for a district, a leader should include a list of all special builds that will be opened for application.

After a builder applies for a special build in a KL district, the leader of the district must allow a minimum of 5 days before approving it, to allow any other interested parties an opportunity to post a competing application. When applicable, when approving a special build application, the district leader must include a brief written justification for choosing that application above competing applications. The approval of the district leader is sufficient for the applicant to begin work on the special build.

5. Red concrete clusters

We're allowing district leaders the opportunity to mark up to 3 adjacent red concrete plots as a single "cluster". These clusters can be claimed simultaneously by a single builder, who's expected to work on the plots in the cluster consecutively.

This is different from initial replotting of houses to create more "complexes" and larger yards, which should be done in the beginning stages of the district and indicated in the district application. Houses within these clusters are still intended to be "normal" individual plots that can be claimed, just claimed as a group and redone simultaneously by the same builder. The motivation behind this is to incentivize a little more "local" consistency within small clusters of houses, and to allow the builder doing the plots to have a bit more flexibility with replotting awkward corners and rooflines which are common with houses that are marked red.
