We all know how to defend castle entrances: Drawbridges, Portcullises, barbicans,.. all these are however expensive and complicated to build, so medieval architects employed an incredibly sophisticated strategy to ensure the defensibility of their fortresses: just build lots of gates one after another.
Hohensalzburg has five, Burg Alt-Ems seven, but none can beat this Austrian Beauty:
Burg Hochosterwitz, with 14 gates!
Dont be afraid to give your castle lots and lots of gates!
Not every gate needs a portcullis or a drawbridge, most gates were just big doors. But what your castle definitely needs is as many of those doors as can fit.
