All layers in rock are by default horizontal - because sediment or ash is deposited horizontally. The 'bending' (folding) occurs after chronologically, and in some cases can be crazy - like the instances where you get vertical layers of rock. Deformation/folding occurs due to tectonic movement...

Will do! Ice fishing is already in the plan (we forgot to put it in the original post). We were thinking coppices/pollards for firewood and maybe even a small shrine in a little cave farther up the slope as well.
